at the 29th Annual Brookline Breeze.

The 29th Annual Brookline Breeze 5K Fitness Run and Walk was held on August 14, 2010. Over 600 runners and walkers braved the heat and humidity to compete in what has become an August tradition here in the Brookline community.

The morning opened with the 1-mile Mini Breeze. The top finisher was nine-year old Kelly Shelpman of Bethel Park with a time of 6:29. As the 5K runners and walkers made their way to the starting line, the band Yinzide Out began to belt out their array of blues and rock classics. It was a fine way to start the morning.

The 5K starting gun sounded at 9:00am and the crowd of runners and walkers began their trip up Brookline Boulevard. At the sixteen minute mark the top runners approached the finish line. Dave Farina of Irwin crossed first with a time of 16:09. Two minutes later, defending female champion Jessica Zozos of Glenshaw made it two-in-a-row with a time of 18:25. The top local runner was Jeremiah Dugan, who crossed the plane at the 18:37 mark.

The Awards Presentation began as the final walkers reached the park. A raffle followed that included an autographed Steeler football, two tickets to a Steeler game and many other valuable gifts. A community festival followed the race festivities. There was a petting zoo, pony rides, balloon art, a moonwalk, several fun games and a climbing wall.

In addition to the race activities at Brookline Park, the second annual Boulevard Breeze-Fest took place on Brookline Boulevard. The merchant displays along the sidewalks and the excellent food added just the right flavor to this year's community celebration.

It was another fantastic day to Breeze through Brookline. The community would like to thank all of the Breeze participants, Citiparks Director Mike Radley, Race-Directors Debbie Brust and Clint Burton, the Citiparks Special Events staff and Soundcrew, the Brookline Recreation Center Staff, and the many volunteers who came to help. Special thanks to our many corporate and community sponsors, whose generous assistance will ensure that the Brookline Breeze tradition continues to flourish. We hope to see everyone back again next year for our 30th anniversary!
