Moore Park 80th Anniversary Celebration
August 24, 2019

Moore Park 80th Anniversary

On Saturday, August 24, 2019, the community of Brookline came together for a day of celebration to honor the 80th Anniversary of the establishment of Joseph F. Moore Park. With perfect summer weather to set the tone, thousands gathered as one to share their memories of the park that has played such a large part in the lives of several generations of Brookliners, both young and old. The eighty-year old recreational facility hadn't seen an event like this since the days of the former Independence Day festivals that ended in the late 1960s.

Organized by Anthony Guarino, chairman of Guarino Group Productions, his wife Joyce and daughter Lea, along with several dedicated volunteers on their festival team, the day long event featured a variety of activities to keep the crowd busy. There was something for everyone, and it turned out to be a fantastic show.

The dual stone tower sprinklers are one of Moore Park's many signature attractions, something everyone has enjoyed.

The entertainment portion of the event began with local guitarist Jake Zucco doing a rousing rendition of Jimi Hendrix's legendary National Anthem, a timely throw-back that also honored the 50th Anniversary of the legendary Woodstock Festival of 1969. This was followed by an invocation and blessing by Moore Park legend, Father Carmen D'Amico. It was a day packed full of legendary Moore Park characters, each with their own story to tell.

The Fonz and DJ Kayoss (Mike Kossler) then got the crowd hopping with a wide selection of classic music. The Faiella's followed with an hour of mandolin playing, then yielded to Bobby V's live acoustic show. Nevin James performed next, paving the way for the headline attraction, Brookline's own "The Wurms," playing a variety of vintage rock covers and some of their own songs. Stand-up comedian Matt Wohlfarth added some light levity to the proceedings during the band's intermission. The Todd DeFazio Show also did a few podcast segments from the park.

Brookline's Wurms prepare to begin their show while comedian Matt "Wolfie" Wohlfarth awaits his intermission routine.

For the kids there was a Ga Ga Ball pit, the Citiparks Roving Art Cart, free admission to the pool, merchandise giveaways, the playground attractions, sprinklers and other craft booths hosted by Boy Scout Troop #6 and Girl Scout Troops #52545 and #52745. The swing sets, merry-go-round and sliding boards hadn't seen so much activity in many, many years.

Adults were treated to a classic car exhibition that featured everything from a Lamborghini and Mazerati to a 1948 Oldsmobile convertible. Yoga classes were conducted on the grass by Amarah Studio and Boutique. Cartoon Anth was on hand to create personalized caricatures and illustrations. There were also merchandise booths, including artist Dino Guarino selling Moore Park Alumni shirts, and plenty of food vendors. A banner was hung by the Parks Conservancy/Brookline Connection information booth for everyone to sign.

Mayor Bill Peduto applauds the festival team for their efforts, a shining example of community spirit in the city.

In addition, festival goers welcomed a special guest when Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto made a surprise visit. After mingling with the crowd, the Mayor took the stage and was presented with a Moore Park Alumni T-Shirt by Tony Guarino. He then spoke briefly about the importance of community events like this and how the togetherness displayed here in Brookline shined brightly like a beacon for the rest of the city to follow.

Mostly, it was a day for Brookliners to come together, reaquaint with old friends and meet new friends. The buzz around the park was so positive, and you could see the smiles on everyone's face. For so many older folks you could see the years turning back as they discussed fondly their past experiences here in the park that was established in 1939 and built with resources provided by the City of Pittsburgh and the federal Works Progress Administration.
