Brookline's First Plumber - 1905

This building stood in the rear of the the home of Fred W. Doerzbacher at 1033 Bayridge Avenue. This 1905 photo shows the first home of "The Brookline Plumber," a local business that has been in operation in Brookline for over 100 years. Eventually the business moved to its present location at 613 Brookline Boulevard.

Shown here are Mr. Doerzbacher and his partner, the gentlemen plumbers in their suits and derbys, with the horse that was used to pull their work wagon. The business has stayed in the Doerzbacher family for over a century, passing to Al Hofmann and then to George Scheuering. The Scheuering's currently own and operate the establishment.

Fred's plumbing business was operated from a garage in the rear of the home, then moved to a building at 968 Brookline Boulevard. Around 1932 the business went into bankruptcy and was eventually moved to a new home at 627 Brookline Boulevard. Later it was relocated to its present location along the boulevard.

When Fred passed in February 1944, his son Fred Jr. took over the business and it has stayed in the Doerzbacher family for over a century, passing to Al Hofmann and then to George Scheuering. The Scheuering's currently own and operate the establishment, which after over 110 years is still in operation today.
