WEEK #7 - October 9, 2010
8-UNDER
BROOKLINE 22 - Carlynton 14
Scoring Summary:
Brenton Morefield 30 run (conversion failed)
Dominic Leonard 25 run (Nick Roell run)
OVERTIME
Jayden Payne 15 pass from Nick Roell (Nick Roell run)
Interception: Jayden Payne
NOTES: The eight-year old Knights endured a long week of hard
practices preparing for this game. Coach Bruce wanted his kids
to play tough for an entire thirty-two minutes. He stressed it
over and over. The kids ran the hillside to build endurance.
The hard work paid off. Brookline came to Carlynton ready for
four quarters of football. By the time this game was over,
they'd given four-plus, and earned a win for their efforts.
The Knights started strong. Brenton Morefield put Brookline on
top 6-0 with a thirty yard breakaway on the first possession.
Carlynton came back, forcing a turnover and recovering on the
Knight one foot line. A touchdown and successful conversion
put the Cougars ahead, 8-6. The second quarter was scoreless.
Brookline began the second half with a nice drive. Dominic
Leonard capped it off with a twenty-five yard scoring burst.
Nick Roell bulled his way up the middle for the conversion,
putting the Knights back in the lead, 14-8. The Cougar defense
answered by forcing another turnover and returning the fumble
sixty yards to tie the game. The Knight defensive line held
back the two-point attempt to keep the score even. The final
quarter was fought to a draw. The game entered overtime.
Carlynton got the first possession. Tackles by Marques Watson
and Roell, followed by a Jayden Payne interception put the
Knights in control. Three rushes, off-setting penalties and
an incomplete pass sent the game into a second overtime.
On the Knights first snap, Roell bootlegged left and headed
for the corner. It was close to a touchdown, but a Brookline
penalty negated the play. Not to be denied, Roell dropped
back and launched a perfect pass to Payne in the endzone for
six-points. Nick added the deuce with a good conversion run.
It was time for the defense to step up and stop the Cougars.
The Knights ended strong. The defensive line forced Carlynton
back four yards in three plays. An incomplete pass on fourth
and fourteen put an end to the contest. Final score: 22-14.
Coach Bruce wanted thirty-two minutes. He got forty and a win.
WEEK #7 - October 9, 2010
9-UNDER
Carlynton 12 - BROOKLINE 0
Interception: Cole McMullan
NOTES: Coach Mike's nine-year olds lost 12-0 to the Carlynton
Cougars. Despite the loss, the team played well. Offensively,
the Knights stumbled. Defensively, aside from the first minute
of mayhem, their strong effort could have produced a shutout.
Carlynton returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. They
recovered a loose ball on the ensuing kickoff. A fifty yard
touchdown run followed. Within a span of forty-five seconds,
Carlynton had rushed to a 12-0 lead. The pain continued for
another fifteen seconds. A Cougar recovered a Knight fumble
and took off for the endzone. Nathan Ault tracked the stray
down and dropped him. The longest minute ended.
The Knight defense got down to business, but not without a
scare. After stopping a Cougar drive with an interception,
Cole McMullan suffered an injury while being pulled to the
ground by his face mask. He laid motionless, surrounded by
coaches and family, as paramedics were summoned. Cole was
transported to the hospital as the game entered halftime.
The second half was fought to a standstill. One Cougar got
loose and threatened to increase the score, but once again
the speedy Ault was a few steps quicker and brought the runner
down short of the endzone. After a minute of mayhem, followed
by thirty-nine minutes of tough, scoreless football, the game
ended as a Carlynton victory.

After examination, Cole McMullan was deemed healthy and fit
for action. Cole returned to the field before the next game
was complete. He looked no worse for wear and tear. Thank God.
WEEK #7 - October 9, 2010
10-UNDER
BROOKLINE 26 - Carlynton 6
Scoring Summary:
Darryl Daniels 73 run (conversion failed)
Quran Powe 41 punt return (conversion failed)
Quran Powe 9 run (conversion failed)
SAFETY - Cullin Baker tackled runner in endzone
Quran Powe 47 pass from Brent Ivory (conversion failed)
Interception: Brent Ivory
Fumble Recovery: Darryl Daniels
NOTES: Coach Joe's ten-year olds joined Coach Donnie's Mighty
Knights as leaders of their respective conferences. Both teams
sport 6-0 records, and both coaches can playfully debate who
has the mightiest Knights in Brookline. After dispatching the
Cougars handily, 26-6, this Knights team looked mighty mighty.
Darryl Daniels started things off with a seventy-three yard
touchdown run on Brookline's first play from scrimmage. The
Cougars were held motionless and forced to punt. Quran Powe
returned the kick forty-one yards for a second Knight score.
A fourth down pass to Khalil Weathers kept Brookline's next
drive alive. Powe again found the endzone, this time with a
nine-yard run. In ten minutes the Knights had an 18-0 lead.
Two takeaways, a Daniels fumble recovery and a Brent Ivory
interception, kept the ball in Brookline's hands. With four
minutes to go in the half, Lamar Lewis scampered thirty-six
yards to the Carlynton twenty. On the next play, a Brookline
pass was intercepted at the twelve yard line. The defense
pushed the Cougars back to the one. With time for one more
play, a back took a handoff and ran right into Cullin Baker.
Baker bagged the Cougar in the endzone for a safety.
The point parade continued in the third quarter. Powe caught
a screen pass from Ivory, eluded a couple of tacklers and
sprinted for the goal line. His forty-seven yard touchdown
reception increased the Knight lead to 26-0.
Midway through the third quarter the JV team entered the game.
The offense, led by Jeremy Jenkins, sputtered but held their
own. The defense did a good job of holding Carlynton back. A
twenty-four yard Cougar scoring run late in the fourth quarter
was their only blemish. Zack Liddle made a nice tackle at the
goal line to stop the conversion attempt.
Pound for pound, who are the mightiest Knights of all? It's
hard to argue against Coach Donnie's seasoned veterans, but
it's fun to watch Coach Joe's upstarts earning some respect.

WEEK #7 - October 9, 2010
11-UNDER
Carlynton 40 - BROOKLINE 0
Fumble Recovery: Richard Stone, Tyler McGough, Ronnie Dunlap
NOTES: The eleven-year old Knights had another difficult game.
Carlynton scored three times in the first half. The third,
with thirty-three seconds remaining, put them ahead 24-0. The
Knights defense kept the Cougars off the board throughout the
third quarter. Three minutes into the fourth the Cats returned
an interception for a score. They repeated that feat minutes
later to complete a forty point afternoon. Brookline got some
nice running from Richard Stone, but the first downs came too
few and far between.
WEEK #7 - October 9, 2010
13-UNDER
BROOKLINE 6 - West Mifflin 0 (forfeit)
NOTES: The West Mifflin 13-U team dropped out of the league.
The Mighty Knights advance to Week #8 with a 6-0 record. Next
week's game against the Southside Sabres is a rematch of last
season's Super Bowl, won by the Knights of Brookline, 18-8.
