Recreation Center
Ice Skating Rink
Winter 1972/1973
For the first couple years, Director Chuck Senft set up an ice skating rink behind the new Recreation Center. It was located where the present-day playground stands, and was a popular attraction, as long as it remained frozen. The downstairs room in the Recreation Building was built of decorative brick, with a working fireplace and a full kitchen for serving refreshments. It was called the Warming Hut, designed with crowds of ice skaters in mind. An accomplished veteran in creating and maintaining an ice skating rink from his many years at Moore Park, Director Chuck Senft diligently went about the task of creating a sheet of ice whenever the temperature dropped below freezing. Kids and adults alike were delighted. The ice skating rink was available for only two skating seasons, the grounds eventually occupied with permanent playground equipment. Chuck always said that he gave up after two years of frustration, the angle of the sun persistently melting the ice he worked so hard to lay down. These photos are from Chuck's collection, showing the rink in 1972 and 1973. |
