The Old Baseball Fields
The first three pictures shown below, placed side by side, show the old Community Center baseball fields as we would remember them in the 1970s and 1980s, looking rather worn but in their own way a beautiful sight. So many childhood memories were made on these diamonds. The two photos below show the fields in 1968, looking down from atop the adjacent hillside. The old dugout and wooden bleachers were still in use at the time. During this time the Recreation Center building was the farmhouse atop the hill, and there were usually a group of onlookers watching the game from above. The final photo is a 1968 view from the Little League outfield fence, showing the old farmhouse atop the hill. So many Brookline children grew up competing against their friends, and foes, on these two fields. The old baseball diamonds, which stood from 1952 through 1981, are now gone, replaced by the Sam Bryen Baseball Complex. |
