APRIL 26 - In honor of Earth Day
2014, the boys and girls of Brookline came together for the 10th
annual Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful "Pick It Up, PA" project, part of the Great
American Cleanup. One team worked their way through Brookline Park, then along
Breining Street, Brookline Boulevard and Fitch Way, while another went west
to tidy up Moore Park. When the cleanup was finished, these hardy youngsters
had collected quite an assortment of tires, garbage and other discarded
debris.

The Cleanup Project here in
Brookline was coordinated by Keith Knecht of the South Pittsburgh
Development Corporation (SPDC), a local community action group, and
the Brookline Recreation Center staff. City-wide effort are directed by
coordinators from the Pennsylvania Resources Council. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is statewide effort to help eliminate illegal dumping and
littering in Pennsylvania. Every year on Earth Day weekend, concerned
citizens throughout the state join in the pickup. This year the park
cleanup was a week late due to the Easter holiday.

This year our hardy volunteers rounded
up a sizeable amount of trash.
When the work is complete, and one looks
at the amount of garbage removed from our two city parks, it is heartening to
see the results of the effort. It is equally disappointing to think that people
are content to discard so much trash without respect to the environment or
the community. The War on Trash is a weekly engagement at the park. The Citiparks
and the Public Works crews do their best to stay on top of the situation, but
we need everyone to chip in and do their part to help keep our parks, and
our community, a safe and clean place for everyone.

After a hard day's morning redding up
the park,
there were plenty of hungry mouths to feed.
Thanks to all of the community volunteers
who made our 10th annual park cleanup another success. Your hard work really
and dedication really does make a difference.
Thanks also
to South Pittsburgh Development Corporation (SPDC), Antonio's Pizzeria and our
partners in Citiparks for their continued support of the Keep
Pennsylvania Beautiful project and our efforts here in Brookline Park.
