NOTES: The Brookline Knights 11-year olds finished the season
with a 20-0 loss to the North Hills Redskins. The shutout was
the last phase in the fatal nosedive that began in Week#7 and
spiraled out of control through the final game. Brookline, who
started the season promisingly with four wins and one defeat,
crashed and burned with an underachieving 4-5 record.
The eighth-seeded Knights put up a good fight against the
top-seeded Redskins. Brookline's defense held the high-scoring
North Hills offense without a point for nearly twenty minutes.
A touchdown late in the second quarter gave the Redskins a
slim 8-0 halftime advantage.
The second half began memorably for the Knights. Kicker Bryan
Bergener's booming blast went airborne for ten yards, striking
a North Hills lineman right smack in the facemask. The ball
bounced into the air and landed in the hands of Nick Manuel
for an unplanned but entertaining onside kick recovery.
The good humor did not last. The North Hills defense continued
their dominance over the Brookline offense. The Redskin backs
rolled on for two more touchdowns to seal the playoff victory.
It's time to forget about this year's disappointments. Just
think, next year these Knights will be moving up to join with
the seasoned veterans of Coach Donnie's Green Machine. Winning
will become commonplace and boys will become men. Sounds good!

NOTES: Brookline's elder Knights came to Thomas-Jefferson High
School for their opening round contest against the TJ Jaguars.
Despite showing some kinks in their armor, the Knights crushed
the Jags by a score of 30-6.
Running back Michael Ignasky scorched the turf for 248 yards
rushing, averaging 20.6 yards per carry on twelve touches. The
offensive line played a great game, opening some mammoth holes
in the TJ defense. Ignasky's speed made them look even bigger.
The Knights defense, adept all season at controlling the line
of scrimmage, played an uncharacteristically merciful game.
The TJ offense stuck close to the ground and pushed their way
forward for a total of fourteen first downs. That's by far a
season high against the fearsome Brookline defenders.
TJ's final drive of the game against the second line covered
seventy-seven yards and took nearly twelve minutes to finish.
The Jaguars one yard touchdown run with 56 seconds remaining
was the first score yielded by the Knight defense since
Game#2, ending a string of six consecutive shutouts.
Despite the subpar performance, the Knights front line turned
in their best stand of the season late in the second quarter.
The Jaguars mounted a seventy-four yard drive that resulted in
a first and goal at the Brookline two yard line. With their
backs to the wall, the Knight defenders got nasty and stopped
the TJ drive dead in it's tracks at the three foot line.
Brookline now moves on to the Semi-Final round next weekend.
The shred of humanity shown the Jaguars is a haunting reminder
that our Knights are just that ... human. Even a dragon has a
soft underbelly. Enough is enough. This is a war. There is no
Geneva Convention in the SSYFL. Take no prisoners. The elusive
Holy Grail lies just beyond the horizon. It's all or nothing!
