Stebbrook Recovers, Wins Senior League

Bob Schwemmer, dean of Brookline Little League and Senior managers, continued his quest for the career victories record as his Stebbrook Pharmacy team staged a remarkable comeback to notch another championship this summer.

"This was my most enjoyable of the 19 seasons I have been in the Brookline program," Schwemmer said after Stebbrook toppled Pollice Construction, which was seeking its third straight Senior Division championship.

"These kids were great. We expected to split our 20 games this season. Every game was a struggle, but they never let up even after losing the playoff opener to Pollice," Schwemmer said.

Sean Schofield, Stebbrook's outstanding shortstop, snapped Jimmy Walsh's no-hit bid with a double in the sixth inning of the third game. Stebbrook went on to fashion a 3-2 victory.

Walsh yielded only three hits, but Stebbrook's Billy Wertz limited Pollice to only four safeties himself.

Schwemmer upped his career victory total to 215, excluding Colt League, and vows he'll stick around until he reaches 300.

Playoff Summary:

GAME ONE: Pollice Construction, led by a three-hit performance from pitcher Jimmy Walsh, defeated Stebbrook Pharmacy 5-3 in the opening game of the 1985 championship series. Walsh helped his own cause by going 2-3 at the plate. Gary Reese doubled and drove in two RBI and Curtis Maxwell also doubled for Pollice. Paul Funaro was the losing pitcher.

GAME TWO: Stebbrook scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 5-3 deficit and take game two from Pollice by a final score of 12-6. Pitcher Billy Wertz picked up the win for Stebbrook while Pollice's Larry Zacharias took the loss. Batting stars for Stebbrook were John Fedak with two singles and two RBI, Dan DePasquale with two RBI, and Mike Falcione with a hit, two runs scored, and two walks. For Pollice, Dennis Cerilli had a single and double, Gary Reese went 4-4, and Don Davin was 2-3 with two RBI. Stebbrook shortstop Sean Schofield was hot defensively with 10 assists and 3 putouts.

GAME THREE: Stebbrook took the 1985 Senior Division championship with a 3-2 nail-biter over Pollice. Stebbrook's Sean Schofield broke up Jimmy Walsh's no-hit bid with a double in the sixth to start a three-run rally that negated Walsh's tenous 1-0 lead. Billy Wertz chucked a four-hitter for Stebbrook, striking out eleven, while Walsh ended with a three-hitter for Pollice. Gary Reese went 2-3 with an RBI for the losers. Congratulations to Stebbrook on a marvelous comeback and a great season.
