The Brookline Recreation Center
held it's innaugural Autumn Car Cruise on Friday, October 14, in Brookline
Park. The cruise was originally scheduled for the previous Friday but
postponed due to rain. Organizers Michelle Underwood, Mary Beth Steban
and Bobby Grieco held their breath in anticipation, wondering if the cars
would come for the rain date, then let out a sigh of relief as Ron Hurbanek
pulled in with his 1956 red Thunderbird, the first classic car of the
day.
Soon, the park was brimming with
activity as one classic vehicle after another drove in to take a spot
in the lower parking lot, adjacent to Brookline Boulevard. By 6:00pm
nearly 20 beautiful cars and trucks lined the lower lot, hoods raised to
show off their well-maintained engines. There was food and drinks for all,
and a boombox blared classic 50s tunes to the delight of the many visitors
who attended.
A "Peoples Choice Award" was voted
upon by the entrants and spectators. The winners were Kenneth and Marie
McClintock of Mount Washington and their Red 1966 Chevy Impala. This slick
automobile is no stranger to the spotlight. The McClintock's Impala was
featured in the 1999 movie "The Temptations." Ken and Marie were given a
trophy by Recreation Center Director Michelle "Mickey" Underwood.
As night fell and the cars began
to drive away, it was clear that this first annual Car Cruise was a
fantastic success. We can't wait until next year! The Recreation Center
Staff thanks everyone who attended the event. We had a great time
and the cars were absolutely fantastic. |
