As part of the Brookline Breeze Week celebration, the Brookline Recreation Center hosted its' 5th Annual Summer Car Cruise on Friday, August 7, 2009, the night before the race. The event attracted nearly 60 vintage vehicles. A DJ spun classic oldies, several door prizes were awarded and there were plenty of refreshments. Add to this a stunning collection of cool cars and there was something for everyone to enjoy.

As an added attraction, Officer Carlos Schrader brought out the Pittsburgh Police S.W.A.T. armored car. There were plenty of gadgets for the kids to see, and they even got to check out some of the gear that our S.W.A.T. officers use. The curious few climbed inside and popped their heads out of the turret, usually manned by a sniper.

While park-goers broused the lot, votes were cast for the People's Choice Award. Competition was tight. When the votes were tallied, the lucky winner was Richard Messenger of Brookline, the owner of an aqua and white 1960 Ford Edsel Ranger.

After the final prizes were handed out and the sun began to set on the horizon, the proud owners of the cars dropped their hoods, revved up their engines and hit the Brookline streets. The following morning, over 700 runners and walkers would hit the streets of Brookline in another classic, the 28th Annual Brookline Breeze 5K Run and Fitness Walk.
