8-UNDER JV GAME (exhibition game)
BROOKLINE 0 - North Hills 0
NOTES: Brookline's little Knights battled it out with the Tiny
Tomahawks from North Hills. They stood toe-to-toe and traded
blows for forty minutes. In the end, the game was declared a
draw. Neither side was able to find the endzone. There were a
couple highlights for the Knights. Brandon McGough and Antwain
Carter made some nice runs from scrimmage, and the defense got
tough late in the game to stop a promising North Hills drive.
WEEK #8 - October 16, 2010
8-UNDER
North Hills 8 - BROOKLINE 6
Scoring Summary:
Jayden Payne 30 run (conversion failed)
Fumble Recovery: Marques Watson, Jayden Payne, Aidan Logan
NOTES: Brookline's eight-year olds lost another close game,
this time to the North Hills Tomahawks. The 8-6 loss is their
third two-point defeat. Although the Knights have out-scored
their opponents 98-66, their season record stands at three
wins and four losses.
North Hills scored on their second possession. A sixty yard
touchdown run and successful conversion staked the Tomahawks
to an 8-0 lead. Brookline responded by moving the sticks twice
on the ensuing drive, but the momentum fizzled. North Hills
again marched downfield. A fumble recovery by Marques Watson
stopped that threat at the Knight fourteen.
In the second half, both teams struggled to get their offense
moving. Takeaways by Jayden Payne and Aidan Logan gave the
Knights an edge in possession. Logan's theft midway through
the final quarter also gave Brookline great field position
inside the Tomahawk thirty yard line.
On the first play Payne took a handoff and covered half the
distance to the endzone in one burst. A penalty negated his
effort. On the next play Payne again took the handoff. This
time he covered the entire thirty yards for a touchdown to
bring the Knights to within two points of a tie. Brookline
came up short on the conversion and that was the game.
The Knight defense has played pretty well so far this season,
better than their 3-4 record justifies. Several players have
stood out with their gritty, heads-up play. There is one,
however, that has earned a moment in the spotlight. Keyshawn
Palmer, a seven-year old defensive back, is one of the best
open field tacklers on this, or any other, team. Keyshawn has
saved several touchdowns with his uncanny ability. Great Job!
WEEK #8 - October 16, 2010
9-UNDER
North Hills 40 - BROOKLINE 22
Scoring Summary:
Nathan Ault 1 run (conversion failed)
Nathan Ault 23 run (Seth Derrick run)
Cole McMullan 2 run (Nathan Ault run)
Fumble Recovery: Nathan Ault, Rooznee Palmer
NOTES: The nine-year old Knights played two twenty minute
games of football against the North Hills Braves. The first
half was terrible. The Knights got shellacked 34-0. The second
half was something quite different. The team awoke from its
malaise and began playing football. The Knights outscored the
Braves 22-6 in the third and fourth quarter. The 40-22 final
score truly was a tale of two halves.
The first half was quite forgettable. Nothing went right. The
offense was non-existent and the defense attempted to equal
the feat. Five successive North Hills touchdowns left the
Knights punch-drunk and shell-shocked.
Whatever was in the orange slices at halftime must have been
laced with a magic elixir. The Knights resurrected their game.
The addition of Rooznee Palmer to the offensive backfield had
outstanding results. Palmer powered the Knights towards the
endzone with four first downs. He dragged a host of Braves all
the way to the one yard line. Nathan Ault capped off the drive
with a one yard plunge for six points.
North Hills answered by returning the ensuing kickoff for a
touchdown, but that aside, things took a dramatic turn for the
better. Brookline's final two offensive possessions resulted
in touchdowns. Seth Derrick, L.J. Orbovich, Cole McMullan,
Ault and Palmer all began scorching the turf for nice gains.
The Knights produced nine first downs in the second half as
opposed to two in the first. It was a tale of two halves.
WEEK #8 - October 16, 2010
10-UNDER
BROOKLINE 32 - North Hills 6
Scoring Summary:
Darryl Daniels 60 run (conversion failed)
Quran Powe 25 pass from Brent Ivory (conversion failed)
Brent Ivory 1 run (conversion failed)
Darryl Daniels 8 run (conversion failed)
Quran Powe 39 pass from Brent Ivory (Darryl Daniels run)
Interception: Jeremy Jenkins
Fumble Recovery: Anthony Carrington (2), Quran Powe,
Will Rupert
NOTES: Coach Joe's Knights extended their winning streak to
seven games with a 32-6 victory over the North Hills Warriors.
This team is really coming together on both sides of the ball.
The offense is loaded with weapons and the defense hits hard.
After a rumble with this gang of Knights, the Warriors headed
back to the 'Burbs bruised and beaten.
The game got off to a familiar start. On Brookline's first
play from scrimmage, Darryl Daniels took off on one of his
patented touchdown sprints, this one measuring sixty yards.
After holding the Warrior offense motionless for a second time
the Knights set out on a six-play march. Quran Powe covered
forty-four yards with two rushes and two receptions. Powe
scored on a twenty-five yard screen pass from Brent Ivory.
North Hills threatened to make a game of it late in the second
quarter. Two long runs brought the ball into the Brookline
redzone. From there the Warriors fought their way past the
goal line, making the score 12-6. Jeremy Jenkin's interception
with forty-two seconds remaining in the half gave Brookline
another opportunity. Daniels broke free for a twenty-four yard
run. A twenty-five yard pass from Ivory followed. A penalty
negated the gain. The first half came to an end.
The Knights picked up where they left off in the second half.
Takeaways by Anthony Carrington kept the ball in Brookline's
control. The Knights cashed in on three of four possessions.
Touchdowns by Ivory, Daniels and Powe increased the Brookline
lead to 32-6. North Hills again threatened late in the fourth
quarter. A runaway Warrior took off down the sideline. Cullin
Baker had an angle and intersected the runner thirty yards
downfield, saving a sure touchdown.
Daniels ended the day with 109 yards rushing on six carries.
Powe finished with seventy-eight receiving yards on three
grabs. Another twenty rushing and fifty on kick returns brings
his total yardage to 148 for the afternoon. Ivory was four of
eleven passing for eighty-three yards. Brookline had eight
first downs. North Hills had four. The Warriors had 130 yards
in total offense.
Congratulations to Quran Powe, whose fourth quarter touchdown
was his 16th of the season. Along with a pair of two-point
conversions, he now has 100 points in seven games.
WEEK #8 - October 16, 2010
11-UNDER
North Hills 54 - BROOKLINE 0
NOTES: The Knights fell to 0-7 with a loss to the North Hills
Redskins. It was hard to watch from the hillside, and worse
on the Brookline side of the field. This has been one of those
seasons that tests even the staunchest of souls.
True success is measured in terms other than wins and losses.
It is found in the character of the individual. There's a lot
of character on this team. Despite the setbacks, these Knights
refuse to surrender. They fight on in spite of the odds. There
are no quitters here. That's what counts in the Game of Life.
The season will end one way or the other, but the strength and
perseverance will endure long after these memories fade.
For those Knights who have persevered and now prepare for the
final battle at Moon Stadium, I'm sure I speak for everyone
when I say, "We're proud of you. Go Knights!"
WEEK #8 - October 16, 2010
13-UNDER
BROOKLINE 24 - Southside 0
Scoring Summary:
Khalil Sanders 3 run (conversion failed)
Anthony Pham 11 pass from Connor McGinnis (conversion failed)
Connor McGinnis 18 run (conversion failed)
Tyion Powe 6 run (conversion failed)
Interception: Anthony Pham
Fumble Recovery: Khalil Sanders
NOTES: The Southside Sabres came to Brookline hoping to avenge
last season's Super Bowl defeat. Instead of the sweet taste of
revenge, the Sabres were again victimized and vanquished. The
Knight's victory ends all speculation about who's #1 in this
'Burgh. Black and Gold may be cool, but Green and Black rules.
Quarterback Connor McGinnis ran the ball control ground game
to perfection, mixing in some timely gains through the air.
The Knights marched to the endzone on their first three
possessions, building an 18-0 halftime lead. The Brookline
defense held the Sabres to negative yardage in the first half.
The second half was much of the same. Brookline had Southside
in a vise and never once loosened the grip. This was another
dominant, punishing victory by the Mighty Knights.
By the numbers, the game went as follows:
Brookline gained 190 yards rushing on 42 attempts; Khalil
Sanders (18-84), Joey Kalsek (6-34), Tyion Powe (9-28), Connor
McGinnis (4-25), Donnie West (2-10), Edgard Fumbula (2-8) and
Taylor Thornton (1-1). McGinnis was four of ten passing for
forty-nine yards. The receivers were Kalsek (2-31), Anthony
Pham (1-11) and Malik Petite (1-7). Richie Ryan recorded the
only Knight sack. Pham's third quarter interception was his
sixth of the season. Brookline had one turnover and was
penalized three times for fifteen yards.
Southside was held to two yards rushing on fourteen attempts.
In the air they completed three of twelve passes for thirteen
yards. The Sabres were penalized five times for thirty-five
yards. Brookline held a five minute advantage in time of
possession and gained eleven first downs to Southside's three.
The Sabres only ball movement was late in the fourth quarter.
Next week's contest against the Montour Spartans is the final
outing of the regular season. The Knights are proud owners of
an eighteen game winning streak, dating back to the first game
of 2009. The Gangsters of the Gridiron would like to extend
that unbeaten run to twenty-two. Wouldn't that be sweet.
